What are Burnout Shirts?

Friday, December 12, 2014

Have you seen shirts with a multi-color that seem a bid transparent in some areas?  Then it’s a good chance that was a burnout shirt.  A burnout shirt is created by applying chemicals to a shirt made with several different fibers.  For example a 100% cotton shirt would not be used to create a burnout shirt, but a shirt that consists of a blend of cotton, rayon, and silk would be a better candidate.  When the chemicals are applied to the shirt, it begins to eat away are certain fibers, usually polyester, and dissolves the fabric, creating a burnout look.  If you were to use a shirt made of one type of fiber, you would have holes all over your shirt.  The blend of fibers in the shirt is necessary for creating a burnout shirt.

Burnout is also known as devore, which is the French word for devour.  The French popularized this technique to re-create the appearance of embroidery.  Check out wikihow.com to learn how to make your own burnout shirt.  And if you like the look, but don’t want to go through the hassle of making one yourself, give Shirts For Anything a call.  We carry a Burnout Shirt by Next Level® that will fulfill all of your burnout needs!
