Organic clothing is made from
100% natural fibers from materials that can be found in nature, such as: cotton,
bamboo, or hemp. In order to be
classified as organic, the crops are grown without the use of synthetic
pesticides, fertilizers or chemicals.
This can be very important for eco-conscious individuals who worry about
the effects of chemical residues on their health and the environment. Organic clothing also requires the use of
organic dyes to color the fabrics. Like
organic food you see at the supermarket, organic clothing is often more
expensive. This is because extra
maintenance required attending to pesticide-free crops as well as ethical
integrity to the company. Many companies
the produce organic clothing also support other environmentally-friendly
environments such as: humane treatment of animals and workers and
fair-trade. They also provide good work
environments for their workers, unlike sweatshops where employees are paid a
low-wage and work long hours in less than favorable environments.
Buyers beware; some companies
may market their shirts as 100% organic, but may not be 100% accurate. Sometimes companies will use 100% organic
cotton fibers for the fabric of the shirt, but then use a polyester thread for
stitching. Polyester is not organic
since it is synthetically produced.
